(PORT CHARLOTTE) The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents of fraudulent phone calls asking for donations to the Salvation Army. Officials say the Salvation Army does not participate in telephone solicitations.

The Salvation Army has been receiving calls from area residents who say an unknown man is contacting them by phone posing as a member of the Salvation Army. The caller is apparently very convincing and is requesting donated items. He is asking the resident to put donated items out next to their mailbox with the initials “SA” on the bag. The caller says a representative from the Salvation Army will stop by and collect the items.

Residents who get such solicitation phone calls are asked to contact the Salvation Army at 941-629-3170.
