Punta Gorda Fire Department is asking Charlotte County to approve an upgrade in the medical treatment skills the department can offer. By state statute, Charlotte County oversees emergency medical services in the county. The request is to allow the Punta Gorda department to become certified to provide advanced life support services. The fire department says it has no intention of running ambulances, but wants to increase the level of medical resport it can provide until an ambulance arrives.
