The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is leading a push for two proposed county ordinances that would require metal recyclers and pawn shops to electronically send investigators the name and address of everyone selling them metal, along with a description of the goods. The information would then be compiled in a database for investigators to comb through when they receive reports of stolen items. This comes as authorities are seeing a spike in thefts and sales of gold, copper and other metal items, the prices for which have gone up in recent months.
